Overspray Cratering

Overspray cratering is a common problem that occurs in the accurate application of coatings.

What visual appearance does overspray cratering take?

Overspray cratering appears as small particles of coating that reach a surface not intentionally sprayed (such as overspray from an interior non-stick reaching the exterior of a pan).

What probable causes are there for overspray cratering?

  • Too much overspray in the application process

What suggested solutions can solve the problem?

  • Move the spray gun closer to the surface; reduce the velocity of the spray, or increase the ratio of coating to air in the spray
  • Mask part to avoid overspray reaching other surfaces
  • Increase air exhaust around parts to remove spray

Support programs, free testing facilities and application advice are often made available from coating manufacturers, helping prevent problems early in the process, saving time and money.
