Research and development have been at the forefront of Whitford’s focus from the outset. A company is driven by solving problems, whether it be through the creation and formulation of new products, or the improvement and continuous development of existing ranges. The Whitford research and development approach remains one of the main advantages we have over our competition.

As a privately held company, Whitford allocates their funds as is felt to be most appropriate, committing one of the highest percentages of company sales to research and development in the entire coatings industry, an annual average approaching ten percent.

Each manufacturing location around the world maintains a complete research and development center and technologically advanced laboratory suite. Expert teams of skilled chemists and technicians have worked to create focused areas of technical excellence globally. Standing by our aim to solve customers’ problems, the Whitford technical teams frequently develop tailor-made products.

The Whitford Research and Development Laboratory

The Whitford laboratory suites include complete chemical testing and analysis equipment for a wide variety of industries, using a unique combination of analytical capabilities, equipment, technical expertise and quality systems. Specific focus on coating characterization and failure-analysis capabilities allow an in-depth insight into our coatings: understanding the make-up and chemical balance enables our technical teams to not only identify but also solve a variety of coating problems.

Whitford’s analytical capabilities provide the basis for a broad range of services, including problem-solving, failure analysis, formulation, chemical analysis, troubleshooting, consulting, experimental design and analysis, and independent laboratory studies. We also offer full analytical capabilities including deformulation (reverse engineering) and contaminant identification.

Due to the complex nature of coatings and our constant focus on research and development, we continuously upgrade laboratory equipment and enhance our services. As well as the more commonplace instruments you would expect to find in a standard laboratory we also have an expansive array of research-grade instrumentation, including but not limited to scanning electronic microscopes, particle-size measurers (to 20 nm), rheometers, TGA-FTIR, and a state-of-the-art sound room.
